It is one of the most integrative courses around. We understand that to be the best yoga teacher you can, you must embody the process - and this takes time, it cannot be cramped into 30 days. Even if it is a 6 Month or 12 Month course it has to be spacious, because it is in the space that yoga resides. It is here we find the integrity and the beauty that yoga is.
SomaChi honors tradition but allows for contemporary methods that suits our modern lifestyle.
The course brings in specialized teachers to educate you within the 200 hours.
SomaChi is akin to Ashtanga and Iyengar. This means you are trained specifically in a style that is establishing itself in the community.
When Identity is established community can develop from common interest.
We are accredited with Yoga Alliance, which is an international body so this can enable you to teach overseas as well as in Australia. And just as important, we have our own Association which maintains high standards for the continual development of our teachers and training.
The SomaChi Yoga Teacher Training Melbourne concentrates on the personal and professional development of our students. Not all Yoga Teacher Training courses are equal. Many courses offered are short, so remember to ask what is their success rate of students actutally becoming working professional teachers. Our course is kept at a maximum of 12 students, and we are proud that more than 90% of our students who have completed our course are currently teaching.
SomaChi may offer students a 6 month traineeship after they have completed their 200 hours. This is very rewarding as you can continue to receive training and experience within a studio environment.
Soma is described as body 'alive body'
Chi is described as energy 'aliveness through the body' aliveness in and of the environment.
Yoga is described as union 'uniting energy through the body' - 'union and integration of self, community, and environment'.
Energy moves in cycles and waves. In this yoga we explore the movement to find aliveness of the 'asana' through OUR body.
We want to find our creativity to unravel into the posture - we then start to recognize our inherited sense of self.
In this course we aspire towards the traditional and are inspired by nature - natural self, our innate intelligence of being.
Lianne founded SomaChi Yoga in 2000, she was asked by students to develop a teacher training and in 2004 the first SomaChi Yoga Teacher Training was underway. By 2007 her school was accredited with the international body of Yoga Alliance.
Her unique style encompasses the influences of physical theatre where She received sponsorship to study Grotowski and experiential theatre in Europe; to travels of the east including Nepal to study Buddhism. Her classes are described by her students as refreshing and experiential. Her style was also described by the Melbourne Age ‘fun classes that swoop into trikonasana (triangle pose) in dance like rolls from the waist, and cycles of sun salutations”.
Lianne's Vinyasa has been influenced by taoism and tai chi and the yoga world of Cyndy Lee, Shiva Rae, and Wade Imre Morrisette. She has an advanced diploma in Zapchen Somatics (Buddhist and Western body psychotherapy), where her principle teachers are Tony Richardson and Julie Henderson. For the past 12 years she has been studying Buddhism with Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche. Lianne has also completed level II and III in Shambhala contemplative meditative practices.
Lianne has been in great demand as a teacher. She has taught yoga, Improvisational and Somatic Movement, Pilates and SomaChi. She has given instruction at Chunky Moves, Melba Conservatorium of Music, and was a teacher trainer for Somatic Pilates at The Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. She has also been flown to outback Australia to run Yoga and Pilates Workshops. In 2011 she taught sensory applications of functional anatomy to medical students of Melbourne University. Her past students are teaching today around Melbourne in SomaChi and Vinyasa, and some are venturing into their own studios.
Her passion and motivation for yoga stems from traditional Eastern and Western contemporary influences. Paying utmost respect for her own teachers, Lianne continues to go beneath the structure of asana, asking the question of how you find spontaneity and energy to express these ancient postures, as it is here we can experience great joy.

Stephanie Day - Completing the SomaChi Teacher Training was an incredible learning experience, one which will always resonate with me. THe course was interesting, fun and challenging on many levels, exploring topics/issues which continually broadened my perspective. I found it to be an amazing personal journey in a very supportive/open environment. I felt an instilled confidence in me as a future instructor and much to my surprise I began teaching earlier than I had expected. I gained my first teaching job through my connections with the studio, and since this time have found that it is through the SomaChi network of teachers that other work has come my way. It's an incredible feeling to be sharing something you love with others. SomaChi is a great community of people who care and love what they do. I'd highly recommend the course to anyone.
Marina Locke - I finished my SomaChi Teacher training in 2007, I have my own yoga studio in the beautiful sea side town of Agnes Water/1770 in QLD. The teacher training was by far the best and most comprehensive training I have undertaken. I felt thoroughly supported throughout my year of study, it was quite simply a life changing experience. The training was personalised, Lianne took on board our life experiences and backgrounds, I certainly wasn't just another number in another yoga course, like I have been in other trainings. I left this training feeling confident enough two years later to open my own studio and couldn't recommend it highly enough.
PS. I have just had my first child and believe my background in yoga, my training with Lianne in meditation and breath helped me achieve my dream of a totally drug free, natural, incredible birth of my baby!
