Meditation | Teachings in Buddhism with Jakob Leschly
Our meditation, Shamatha or Calm Abiding, is learning to watch mind from moment to moment through our breath. In this meditation, we start where we are, learning the quality of equanimity, non judgment, with bare attention to this moment now, or simply "Being Present".
Shamatha/Vipashyana meditation has it roots with the Buddha over 2500 years ago, and is a traditional foundation practice for meditation. During the meditation, we also offer a contemplation practice, together with short breaks to allow the mind to stay focused and aware. We simply observe breath and watch the mind.
Our meditation is welcome to everyone, from beginners through to people who have experience with Shamatha/Vipashyana.
Both Lianne and Peter have been practicing Shamatha/Vipashyana meditation for over 15 years.
Meditation Classes are held Tuesdays with Lianne at 6PM, and Wednesdays with Peter at 6PM.
The meditation is free for people on current SomaChi Yoga Studio passes, or $15 for a casual meditation class. All casual class proceeds from the mediation are donated to Save A Dog.
"Shamatha has nothing to do with self-improvement, since, youíre already perfect right now. The limitless qualities of loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity are your deep-down, ultimate reality, and those are qualities that cannot be improved upon." (Pema Chodron)

Choosing the Causes of Happiness and Freedom Cycle One Workshop -
Saturday February 18, 10am-4pm
We can discover happiness and freedom beyond our ordinary limitations by working constructively with, and mastering, our present attitudes and actions. This mastery is neither exclusive to some people "who just have it", nor is it due to supernatural powers. Rather, according to the Buddha, it comes from becoming aware of, and working with, our existing internal and external conditions. Buddhist knowledge and meditation provides the insight and freedom to work with these conditions. This introductory workshop will offer a theoretical overview in the morning and the practical foundations of meditation in the afternoon.
Cycle Two Workshop -
Sunday February 19, 10am-4pm
The Tibetan sage Mipam Rinpoche (1846-1912) wrote a beautiful sadhana that commemorates the Buddha, and Kyabje Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche (1910-1991) wrote an explanation on it that includes teachings on the stages of shamatha- or mindfulness meditation. The workshop will provide general and specific instruction on the practice of mindfulness and insight meditation, as well as specific instruction on this particular practice. In addition the workshop will allow for group practice of the Buddha Sadhana, with time for questions and discussion.
Cycle Three Workshop -
Monday February 20th 7.30pm – 9pm
First will be a practical introduction to the practice of keeping a shrine, describing the elements of body, speech, and mind, as well as the details associated with shrine practice. Next, a practical overview of the purpose and relevance of feast, or tsok practice, and how it is done – specifically according to Mipam Rinpoche’s Seven Line Sadhana.
Cost: $60 per day/$45 concession or $100 for both days/ $75 concession.
